Ray Banks
With a heart for service and a passion for transformation, Ray Banks has dedicated his life to uplifting individuals and communities. Since becoming Executive Director of Restoration Ministries in 1998, he has played a pivotal role in helping over 1,000 men and women successfully complete recovery programs, guiding them toward renewed hope and purpose. His commitment to youth mentorship began in 1991 when he founded a youth group for teenagers in Harvey and the surrounding suburbs. This passion led him to serve as Youth Pastor at Spirit of God Fellowship in South Holland, where he inspired and nurtured countless young people.
Beyond ministry, Ray is a dedicated advocate for education. As a current elected member of the Thornton Township District 205 School Board, he has worked to ensure students and families have a voice in shaping the district’s future. He was instrumental in establishing a student board, empowering students to take an active role in their academic journey. In 2018, he became Vice President of Restoration Ministries, furthering his impact on community outreach. Additionally, he serves as a volunteer counselor for Harvey House residents, providing guidance and support to those seeking a fresh start. With his deep-rooted commitment to service, mentorship, and education, Ray Banks continues to be a strong advocate for the students and families of District 205.

Bernadette Lawrence
Bernadette Lawrence is a proud graduate of District 205 and a lifelong advocate for education, youth development, and community health. After earning her degree from the University of Illinois in 1979, she dedicated her career to service as a teacher, healthcare professional, and community leader. As a former educator at New Covenant Christian Academy in Phoenix, she understands the importance of quality education in shaping young minds. Her passion for mentoring and youth engagement extended to her leadership as President of Harvey Little League, where she fostered teamwork, discipline, and personal growth for young athletes.
A retired registered nurse, Bernadette has spent decades caring for others and promoting health and wellness. As an entrepreneur and owner of Garza Fat Loss Camp, she continues to empower individuals to take charge of their well-being. A devoted wife and mother, she and her husband raised three children, all proud graduates of District 205. Now, as a candidate for the District 205 School Board, Bernadette is committed to ensuring that every student has access to the resources, support, and opportunities needed for success. With her experience in education, healthcare, and community leadership, she is ready to bring a fresh perspective and strong advocacy to the district.

Almetta Vasser-Moody
Almetta Vasser-Moody has been a proud resident of District 205 for 39 years, dedicating her life to public service, community engagement, and youth development. As a widow and mother of four children—all of whom attended District 205—she understands the importance of strong schools and a supportive learning environment. Her career spans over three decades of service, including 35 years as a State of Illinois employee, where she was an active member of AFSCME. She also spent seven years working with Thornton Township, further strengthening her ties to the community.
Almetta has consistently served in leadership roles that enhance local resources and opportunities. She has worked as an Outreach Coordinator for the Harvey Public Library, ensuring that families have access to educational support and programming. Her commitment to community development is evident in her roles as a former Riverdale Park Commissioner and Riverdale Trustee, as well as in her current position with Dolton Park. Now, as a candidate for the District 205 School Board, Almetta is committed to advocating for students, families, and educators to ensure a brighter future for the district.

Sonja K. Bradley
Sonja K. Bradley is a proud alumna of Thornton Township District 205 and a dedicated advocate for education, equity, and student success. With a Bachelor of Science in Food Science and Human Nutrition from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, she brings a strong academic foundation and leadership experience to her community. As the former President of the District 205 Student Board of Education, she played a key role in the district’s adoption of the NAACP/ILACP 10 Shared Principles and continues to mentor young leaders. Her commitment to community engagement is evident in initiatives like Hands Across Harvey, Walk for Peace, and the Restorative Justice Conference, as well as her contributions as a keynote speaker and panelist at events focused on education and public safety.
Beyond advocacy, Sonja’s research on student nutrition led to District 205 selecting a new food service vendor, improving meal quality for students. She earned the 2024 Undergraduate Research Symposium Award and conducted research on noncaloric sweeteners’ effects on metabolism at the University of Illinois. As a pharmacy technician, tutor, and career adviser, she remains dedicated to public health and student success. Now running for the District 205 School Board, Sonja is committed to ensuring that all students feel supported and empowered. With a track record of leadership, innovation, and community service, she is ready to help shape a brighter future for District 205.
